What Is Live Shopping?
Live shopping is a retail format in which a host presents products over a live video stream while viewers watch, chat, and buy inside the same interface without leaving the broadcast.
That last clause is the whole point. Broadcasting a product demo on Instagram and dropping a link in the caption isn’t live shopping. Live shopping means the purchase path is part of the video experience: a product card overlaid on the player, a pinned item in the chat rail, an auction timer, a one-tap checkout sheet that slides up while the stream keeps playing behind it.
You’ll see the same idea under several names. Live commerce, livestream shopping, live selling, live video shopping, and live social shopping all describe roughly this format.
Retail teams in Asia usually say live commerce. US brands usually say live shopping.
Three things separate it from every other way of selling online:
- It’s synchronous. Everyone watching sees the same thing at the same moment, which is what makes scarcity claims and countdown timers work.
- It’s two-way. Viewers type a question about sizing and the host answers out loud, thirty seconds later, on camera.
- It’s transactional inside the player. Purchase intent and purchase action happen in one place, so nothing leaks between the demo and the cart.

These terms get used interchangeably, and that’s mostly fine in casual conversation. It stops being fine when you’re scoping a build, because each one implies different infrastructure.

The practical difference for your roadmap: shoppable video needs a player with an overlay layer and a product catalog lookup. Live shopping needs all of that plus ingest, transcoding, delivery, and a chat system that stays in sync with the video. It’s a much bigger surface area.
Live social shopping sits in between. You’re renting someone else’s video infrastructure (TikTok’s, Instagram’s, Amazon’s) and giving up control of latency, data, and margin in exchange for their audience.
How Does Live Shopping Work?
A live shopping session runs through seven stages. Six of them are the same regardless of platform.
1. Scheduling and pre-promotion. The event gets a date, a landing page, and a reminder mechanism. Sessions that convert well are almost always promoted for days beforehand, because the format depends on people showing up at a specific time.
2. Capture and ingest. The host’s camera feed leaves the studio through an encoder. That encoder pushes to your platform over RTMP or, on unreliable networks, SRT. One stream in, from one place.
3. Transcoding into a ladder. The single incoming stream gets re-encoded into several quality levels, so a viewer on hotel Wi-Fi and a viewer on fiber both get watchable video. That’s adaptive bitrate streaming, and it’s not optional for a commerce audience you didn’t pre-qualify.
4. Delivery to viewers. The renditions go out through a CDN for live streaming as HLS segments or a WebRTC session, depending on how low you need latency to go.
5. Interaction. Chat, reactions, polls, and Q&A run over a separate real-time channel, usually WebSocket. The host reads chat off a monitor and responds on camera.
6. Commerce actions. The host or a producer pushes a product card, starts an auction, or triggers a flash discount. Viewers tap, a checkout sheet opens, payment clears, inventory decrements.
7. Replay and repurposing. The recording becomes a VOD asset within minutes, and the best 60 seconds become clips for paid social. This is where live to VOD matters, because most of a session’s revenue often arrives after the session ends.
Stages 2 through 4 and 7 are pure video infrastructure. Stages 5 and 6 are application logic.

Five systems have to work together. If any one of them is weak, the session feels broken in a way viewers can’t articulate but do act on: they leave.
Video pipeline

Nothing makes a session feel more broken. Your chat delay and your video latency need to be within a couple of seconds of each other.
Overlay and state sync
Product cards, price flashes, countdown timers, and sold-out badges. These are rendered by the client, not burned into the video, so they stay crisp and clickable. A control channel tells every connected viewer which card is currently active.
This is the same layer that powers any kind of interactive video, and getting the state machine right matters more than the visual design.
Commerce backend
Catalog lookups, inventory locks, cart, payment, tax, fulfillment. Live traffic makes oversell a real risk: a thousand people tapping the same limited-stock item inside three seconds will find every race condition you have. Reserve inventory on tap, not on payment confirmation.
Analytics and events

The response gives you an RTMP or SRT ingest URL plus a stream key for the host’s encoder, and a playback ID for your viewers.

Never burn product graphics into the video. You lose click targets, localization, and the ability to swap a sold-out item mid-stream.
Step 4: Wire the commerce path. Tapping a card should reserve inventory immediately with a short TTL, then open your existing checkout. Reuse the payment flow you already have; the live context is a new entry point, not a new payment system.
Step 5: Subscribe to stream events. Register a webhook endpoint and react to lifecycle events:

Use livestream.active to flip your storefront banner to “Live now”, livestream.idle to swap in the replay, and livestream.disconnected to page whoever’s on call.
Step 6: Turn on chat. Any real-time messaging service works. The requirement is that you can delay chat delivery to match your video latency, and that you can pin a message when a card goes active.
Step 7: Ship the replay. Because the stream was created with record: true, the VOD asset exists as soon as the session ends. Store your product card timestamps alongside it and replay them against the recording. A small team can get through steps 1, 2, and 5 in an afternoon. Steps 3, 4, and 6 are where your actual product work lives.
Latency Targets and Protocols for Live Shopping
Latency is the single technical decision that shapes everything else about a live shopping build. Pick the target from the format, then pick the protocol from the target.

HLS is the right default. It plays everywhere without plugins, scales through any CDN, and at low-latency settings gets you to 3-8 seconds, which is fine for a host demoing products and reading chat.
Go to WebRTC only when the transaction itself is time-sensitive. A closing auction or a live co-host cross-talk needs sub-second delivery, and you accept a much harder scaling story to get it. One rule regardless of protocol: measure glass-to-glass, not server-side. Put a stopwatch on camera and film the viewer’s screen. The number you get is almost always worse than your dashboard claims.
Is Live Shopping Right for Your Product?
Run through this before committing engineering time. Four or more yeses means the format probably works for you.
- Do your products benefit from demonstration, fit, texture, or scale that photos miss?
- Do you have someone who can hold attention on camera for 45 minutes?
- Can you commit to a recurring schedule for at least three months?
- Is your average order value high enough to justify production cost, or your volume high enough to make thin margins work?
- Do you have inventory that can carry scarcity honestly, like limited runs, drops, or one-of-one items?
- Does your audience already watch live content anywhere?
